Pushkar is known as the King of Pilgrimages (Tirthraj) and has a history going back to the days of creation. It is believed the first Yagya on earth was done here by Lord Brahma. It was the original temple town with hundreds of temples. Most of the ancient temples were destroyed by invaders. Today there are more than 500 temples in the city.
Brahmaji Temple was first built by the Maharaja of Ratlam in the 14th century CE. It is believed the original temple was built by Rishi Vishwamitra and renovated by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century CE. The temple celebrates a festival on Kartik Purnima each year.
