The idol that is enshrined in the Shrinathji temple is a Swayambhu (Self Appeared) idol. It was found near the famed Govardhan Hill near Vrindavan. The idol was shifted from Vrindavan to protect it from the Mughal king - Aurangzeb.

The Shrinathji temple is modelled on the Nand Maharaj temple in Vrindavan. Seven flags fly atop the Shikhara of the temple. These flags represent the seven houses of Pushti Marg or Vallabha Sampradaya. In this temple, Lord Krishna is considered the ‘Thakur’ of the Haveli.
