By Rail

Places to visit near Somnath.

1. Bhalka Tirth

Bhalka Tirtha is located in the Veraval. It is the place where Krishna was hit by an arrow, shot by a hunter named Jara. After this, he is said to have left the earth for the heavenly abode. Bhalka Teerth is situated almost 4 Km away from the Somnath temple.

2. Gita Mandir

Gita Mandir is also known as Birla Mandir. It was built in 1970 by the Birlas at the Dehotsarg campus on the outskirts of Mathura. Gita Mandir is famous for its depiction of Shrimad Bhagwat Geeta, which is carved on 18 marble pillars. The mandir, dedicated to Lord Krishna, is decorated with paintings of Lord Krishna. It also has the idols of Lord Lakshmi-Narayan and Lord Sita Ram on the two sides of Lord Krishna.

3. Shree Parshuram Temple

Shree Parshuram Temple is one of the best temples to visit in Veraval. The legend informs that Lord Parshurama performs rites and penance to absolve himself from the sins of killing kshtariyas. This temple is situated right next to the Triveni Ghat. Temple too is on the same 1 km stretch starting from Somnath mandir and ending at Gita temple.

4. Dehotsarg Tirth

This Tirtha is located on the banks of Hiran at a distance of 1.5 Km from Somnath temple. Bhagavan Shree Krishna took his divine journey to Neejdham from this sacred soil. Rich accounts of the divine Shree Krishna Neejdham Prasthan Leela are maintained. It is believed that Shri Krishna departed on the first day of the bright fortnight of Chaitra month in 3102 BC. The footprint of Bhagavan Shree Krishna is carved here to mark the divine memory of Shree Krishna Neejdham Prasthan Leela. Baldevji, the elder brother of Shree Krishna also took his last journey from here in his original serpent form. This is marked by an ancient holy cave called “Dauji-ni Gufa”

 5. Suraj Mandir

Suraj Mandir is also situated near the Triveni Ghat. It is one of the few temples dedicated to the Sun God. There are depictions of elephants, lions, and various other birds and animals in the temple. This is one of the rare holy sites dedicated to the spirits of nature which are praised in the Hindu heritage and religion.

6. Panch Pandav Gufa

These Pandava caves are also referred to as Aravalem Caves. It is associated with folklores and other mythological tales. It is believed that the Pandava brothers had spent time in this temple during the term of their exile. With consistent prayers and fasts, they had evoked the powers of Lord Shiva in this cave. The temple enshrines the idols of various Hindu gods and goddesses. It also has idols of the five Pandava brothers. Tourists and pilgrims visit Panch Pandav Gufa to offer their prayers to Lord Rama, Lord Shiva, and Goddess Durga. It also overlooks the sea.

7. Triveni Ghat

Triveni Ghat is one of the most important holy places in Somnath. It is frequently visited by many tourists and pilgrims. This is the place where the chatri of Lord Krishna is constructed. Krishna is said to have visited this holy spot after being hit by an arrow. The Ghat is considered to be the cremation ground of Lord Krishna.

8. Gir National Forest

Gir Forest or Sasan Gir is a fully protected national park and wildlife sanctuary. It is part of the Kathiawar-Gir dry deciduous forests ecoregion. Today, it is the only area in Asia, where Asiatic lions occur. It is considered one of the most important protected areas in Asia due to its supported species. It is located 65 Km from Somnath.

9. Somnath Beach

Somnath Beach is well connected by an efficient transport network. The port town of Veraval serves as a gateway to Somnath beach. It is the best to place at Veraval for Nature lovers. Somnath Beach has situated 6 Km to the east of Veraval. There is a fishing port. You can catch a glimpse of different kinds of fishing trawlers, country crafts, and dhows engaged in fishing operations.
