Tarakeswar Mandir, West Bengal – History, Timings & How to Reach

Tarakeswar Mandir is an important Hindu pilgrimage center dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is located in Tarakeswar in the Hooghly district of West Bengal state. It is a famous UNESCO heritage site titled “The Great Chola Temples”.

The Taraknath temple’s deity is Lord Taraknath which is a violent form(Ugra) of Lord Shiva when he drank the venom(Vish) during the Samudra Manthan. The current structure of the temple was built in 1729 by Raja Bharamall in the Atchala structure and Bengal-style architecture. A Natmandir is in front of the temple. Next to it, There are shrines of Goddess Laxmi Narayan and Goddess Kali.

There is a water tank named Dudhpukur, which is towards the north of the temple. It is believed that the devotees who take a holy dip in this Dudhpukur water tank and then go to the temple, their wishes will be fulfilled. ‘Shivratri‘ and ‘Gajan‘ are celebrated here. A lot of pilgrims came to visit this place at this time and also in Shravan as it is very auspicious.

Tarakeswar Mandir

It is said that a follower of Lord Shiva named Vishnu Das came to live with his family. His Brother who was a mandate went to a city by passing through a forest, one day he saw that a cow released its milk in a place and later he and his brother found that a Shiv Lingam was there. With the company of the villagers, they built a small temple there. Today’s temple is a structure made by Raja Bharmalla in 1729 AD, the king had a dream of this place and he was asked to build a temple there. Thus, The Swayambhu Shivlingam and the temple were built and named as Taraknath or Tarakeswar Mandir.

How to Reach Tarakeswar Mandir, West Bengal?

By Road

You can get buses or taxis or autos to this place. From Dharmatala, Chinsura and Howrah you can get direct buses to Tarakeshwar or you can book a taxi.

By Rail

The nearest railway station is Tarakeshwar railway station, which is 1 km from the temple. You can get an auto or taxi to the temple.

By Air

The nearest airport is Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata. The distance from the temple is around 32 km. you can book a cab or taxi. From here you can board your domestic as well as international flight.
