What is the history of Shri Jagannath Temple Puri?

Pandavas is believed to have visited the shrine of Jagannath Temple. In fact, Jesus Christ and Mohammed have also once been to this place.

The construction of Jagannath Temple dates back to the 2nd century B.C when the Kharavela was the emperor of Kalinga (present-day – Odisha). The inscriptions in Udaygiri hills near Bhubaneshwar clearly speaks of Jagannath as a Jain deity. There’s no reliable evidence. In the 9th century A.D, the sage and scholar Sankaracharya visited Puri and founded the Govardhan math. The four math established by Sankaracharya are the four major Dhams and Puri is one of them.

The Jagannath Temple faced major deterioration due to improper management during the British rule and the rajas. So, after the Independence of India, the Government of Orissa felt that some legislative measures are to be taken to restore the religious pride of the institution. Considering this an act was passed that stated that the management, administration, and governance of the temple vests in a Committee known as Shri Jagannath Temple Managing Committee. This Committee will include the major rights about the administration of the temple.

Till now the Shri Jagannath Temple Managing Committee administers the Jagannath Temple.

Sri Hari Sayan – Sri Hari Sayan festival of Lord Jagannath is observe on the Asadha sukla ekadashi.
