The temple is managed by “Shree Mahalakshmi Temple Charities.” Mahalaxmi temple consists of idols of three deities of Mahalakshmi, Mahakali and Mahasaraswati. Mahalaxmi is the central deity of Devi Mahatmyam.

Hundreds of devotees visit the Mahalaxmi temple every day. While, on the festival of Navratri and Diwali and in the month of Margashirsha thousands of devotees comes to visit Mahalaxmi temple as they believe Mahalakshmi Mata gets alive or ‘Jagrut‘ during this time.

History of Mahalaxmi Temple

The temple was built back in 1785. The history of building the Mahalaxmi temple is connected to the building of Hornby Vellard. Hornby Vellard was built in order to unite all seven islands of Mumbai. While building Hornby Vellard the sea wall collapsed two times. Then, the builder Prathare Prabhu got dreamed of a statue of Laxmi near Worli.

He built the same statue and thus Mahalaxmi Temple was constructed. After, the construction of Mahalaxmi Temple it was possible to build Horny Vellard successfully.
